Obituary of Michael E Herrington

Please share a memory of Michael to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Michael E “Mike” Herrington, 78, of Johnsonville (Town of Pittstown), beloved husband for 49 years to Catherine D. Collett Herrington, peacefully entered into eternal life on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

Born in Troy, NY, he was the son of the late Wilber and Dolores Slater Herrington and was a graduate of Hoosic Valley High School in Schaghticoke and Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, where he graduated with Honors and earned his Associates Degree in 1995.

Mike was a U.S. Army veteran having served from 1966 to 1968 and was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Expert Badge Rifle M-14, Marksman Badge Rifle M-16, Sharpshooter Badge Pistol and his Honorable Discharge.

Mike had been employed by Bendix Corp. in Green Island and had also been employed at Nastech and Yankee One Dollar after graduating with Honors from HVCC.

A proud American and Veteran, Michael was a proud member of the Viet Nam Vets MC and worked tirelessly to bring the Vietnam Memorial Wall to the Albany (tri-State) area. Although he never talked about it, he always took the time to just listen to any Veteran, young or old and he never gave opinions – just listened and those Veteran’s always went away with a smile. He always hoped he had made them feel better. His Veteran’s group was always involved in projects to help Vets and they traveled around the country on their motorcycles.

Michael was a mail-order Minister! He wrote and had published short stories, loved to visit his son and his family in Arizona. He enjoyed reading, music – The Stones, AC/DC, Steppenwolf, etc. The Giants, the Yankees, Mickey Mantle was his second hero – his Dad was his first and foremost! He loved being with his family and was always there to help each one of them in he could.

Michael was interested in EVERYTHING, so Catherine learned a lot about trains, planes and all modes of travel, actually, car repair, animals, birds, History, Viva Las Vegas and Elvis along with West Side Story and a lot of War History – every War, not just Viet Nam!

Michael could make anyone laugh with his sometimes “Colorful” wit. He hated his wife’s choice of music and would loudly sing the songs off-key while changing the words! One never knew what subject he was going to talk about, but the subjects were always interesting.

Beloved husband of Catherine, devoted father of Angela Marie (Andrew) Herrington and Burton (Alicia) VanBuren, cherished grandfather of John Michael, Aubrey Noel, Nicholas, Aislyn, his good buddy Emery and the late Matthew, dear brother of Scott (Verlene) Herrington, Wendy (Dan) Calhoun, Pamela (Theodore “Ted”) Doty, Melinda (Paul) Turco, Cindy Lou (Howard) Newman and Holly (Ronald “Ron”) Burke, also survived by  several nieces and nephews and their families.

Funeral services are private at the convenience of the family at the White-Sanvidge Funeral Home, 58 Leversee Road (RT-40 in Speigletown) Troy, NY 12182. Flowers can be delivered there on Wednesday between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
