I will miss Carol.
For fifteen years, I had the privilege of knowing her. Every visit to my best friend Sue’s meant being welcomed by Carol and George with open arms. Carol had a way of making me feel at home—her warmth, her kindness, and most of all, her laugh. It was the kind of laugh that didn’t just come from her mouth but from her whole being—head thrown back, body bent over, waves of joy. That kind of light is rare, and now the world feels a little dimmer without it.
Carol was always genuinely interested in my life—how I was doing, how my son was doing, how things were going. Sometimes, interactions with a friend’s parents can feel formal or a little awkward, but never with Carol. She had a way of making me feel not just welcome but wanted. She always took the time to come and visit with me, to chat, to joke, and to offer words of encouragement. She had a generosity of spirit.
As people grow older, they often retreat into themselves, but Carol never did. She faced life with humor and resilience. I remember visiting her after she had lost a toe. Knowing my squeamishness, she found the whole thing hilarious. "It’s not that bad! Look at it!" she teased, laughing so hard at my reaction. That was how I knew Carol—facing life’s challenges with humor, strength, and an unwavering positive spirit. Where others might have given in to sadness, she found a reason to laugh.
One of the greatest gifts Carol ever gave me was something tangible, something I use every night—a quilt. After my mother passed, Sue and I found a quilt topper my mom had started but never finished. Without my knowing, Sue gave it to Carol. With her talented hands and artistic eye, Carol took that unfinished quilt and turned it into something beautiful. She chose the perfect fabric for the back, one she knew I would love, and quilted an intricate, pattern into it. That quilt is more than fabric and thread—it is a piece of my past, stitched together with Carol’s care and generosity. It is a reminder that love continues on.
She brought joy, laughter, and kindness into the lives of those lucky enough to know her. And though she is no longer here, her warmth, her humor, and her unwavering spirit remain in the stories we tell, in the love she shared, and in the memories we hold close.
I will miss Carol. But I will carry her with me always.
