Obituary of Stephen M. Grey

Please share a memory of Stephen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

GREY, STEPHEN (Steve) M., 64, of SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (formerly of Clifton Park and Mechanicville) beloved husband of Janet L. O’Hara Grey entered eternal rest on Saturday, March 15, 2025, in Sarasota, Florida.

Steve was born in Mechanicville, NY to William Edward and Marjorie Martin Grey on June 21, 1960. He graduated from Mechanicville High School in 1978 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Business from SUNY Oswego where he was also a member of ZXZ fraternity. He continued his education, postgraduate, to earn his CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) and ChFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) designations. Steve joined his father’s business that was started in 1959 and together they were GREY INSURANCE & FINANCIAL SERVICES. In the height of his career, he was recognized as one of the Top 100 Agents with New York Life Insurance Company whom he contracted with for over 42 years as a Registered Financial Planner. He was widely recognized in his field and received countless honors and awards for his consistent success and professional integrity. Steve worked closely with his many clients and considered them family as he helped them create their own financial legacies. He was one of the lucky ones; he loved what he did and never considered it work.

Away from work, Steve was an integral part of his community and contributed to many causes not only financially but also with his time. For over a decade, he served on the Finance Committee of St. Edward the Confessor Roman Catholic Church in Clifton Park, NY. He also served many years on the Juniper Hill Board in Bolton Landing, NY. In addition, he was a loving and enthusiastic supporter of his wife’s many causes – they were truly a team.

Steve loved being outside and especially near any body of water but particularly his beloved Lake George. He loved to camp, hike, and canoe and was an avid skier but he could also sit on a beach for hours on end. If he were lucky enough to be doing any of the above with his children, family or friends he was at his happiest. He cherished his family and friendships – many literally lifelong - above all else and was an all-around lover of life.  His smile – and dance moves – would light up a room.

Steve is survived by his best friend and wife of 36 years, Janet O’Hara Grey;  daughter, Emily Rose (Tor Tremblay) of Brooklyn, NY and son, Ian Brennan (fiancé, Lane Rawlings), of New York, NY; his siblings William II (Patricia) of Mechanicville, NY; Mark (Marianne) of Ambler, PA; twin, Daniel, who was literally his other half, (Catherine), of Stillwater, NY; and Erin Maggi (Gary) of Lake George, NY. He was also survived by many – MANY - cousins, nieces and nephews whom he cherished and adored.

He was predeceased by his beloved parents William and Marjorie Grey and his brother, Martin Grey.

Relatives and friends are invited to both Steve’s Calling Hours on Friday, April 25, 2025, from 4-7 p.m.  and to his Mass of Christian Burial which will be celebrated on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 11:00am, both at St. Edward the Confessor Church, 569 Clifton Park Center Road, Clifton Park, NY 12065

In lieu of flowers, we ask you to consider making a memorial donation to the following organizations in Steve’s name:

Our heartfelt thanks to Christine Strassi, Sara Brown (PT), the supportive staff at the Saratoga YMCA and the many physicians and staff who cared so compassionately for Steve throughout the years.  We are especially grateful to the caring staff at The Pines of Sarasota who gently guided him on his final journey home.

“…you will endure a lifetime of missing, for the privilege of having loved.”
