Sister Maria Charles was a special “ Gift from Heaven!” She arrived at St. Angela Parish in 1988 after being named a Parish Associate. Her smiles, energy, ideas and love for her new parish family were overflowing. All the parishioners were touched by her grace and generosity. I taught Drama and Movement in the summer day camps she directed. Also when I served as a parish, catechist, she was Director of our Religious Education program for many years. Sister Maria led by example and we were blessed to be in her presence for so many years. Now that she has passed on to her Heavenly Home where Love and Peace and Joy abound, we are so happy to announce to her family and friends that a Mass of Celebration for the Life of Sister Maria Charles Norton will be celebrated at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish
( formerly St. Angela Parish.). At the 4 pm Mass on Saturday July 12. Mattapan, MA.
Father William P. Joy will be the celebrant and the Joyful Choir will provide the music.
We look forward to welcoming many friends and former parishioners. We especially want her family and the blessed Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet to know that Sister Maria. Charles will be remembered always and live on in our hearts forever. God bless you all.
Patricia Kleiber and Ben Kleiber
On behalf of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish
( formerly St. Angela Parish in Mattapan, MA.)

Sister Maria Charles was my eighth grade teacher. In those by gone days, we had one teacher per classroom to manage 40+ students. Sister Maria did this with skill and style. When we met again 50 years later at our class reunion, she immediately knew who I was and spoke to me by name. She continued to stay in communication with our class sending us inspirational prayers and poems with her words of wisdom included. I envision her now singing and dancing with King David and the angels in her heavenly home.

Sister Maria was Principal of Blessed Sacrament School in Johnson City, NY, and taught the 8th Grade Class of 1966 (a/k/a, “The Best Children in the Triple Cities.) She was a wonderful teacher, and an even better human being. Our class & Sister Maria stayed in touch over the past 59 years, sharing telephone calls, e-mails, greeting cards & visits at the Provincial House. We had a few class reunions over the years, and Sister Maria was always with us (most recently at our 50th.) A few years back a group of us, with our spouses, visited her at the Provincial House, and she was so filled with joy…she had us laughing, singing, doing the Chicken Dance… she was the youngest person in the room. She was always interested in how we were doing, as well as how our children & grandchildren were doing. She would send such beautiful cards & notes to our granddaughter, Rhoo, who enjoyed them so much. She would always remind us that Jesus loves us. She was such a blessing in our lives. We’ll miss her greatly, but we know she went straight to Heaven and is now enjoying eternal life with Jesus, who she served so well and loved so much. We love you, Sister Maria!
Dennis, Sandi, Megan, Rhoo & Stacy.

Sister Maria was a dear friend to me for more than fifteen years. She encouraged me to attend Mass every Sunday at the PH . We prayed together and afterwards we shared our stories and thoughts from the previous week, many times over a cup of tea. She was always patient, generous, and kind, always providing inspiration and encouragement. I have many happy memories of those times we shared at the PH. I will miss her very much. I will remember her always.

Sr. Maria Charles prepared my younger brother, Chris, for his first communion years ago. This was very important to him and our family. Chris had cerebral palsy and was mentally challenged. When our parish would not let him receive this, saying he did not understand, Sr. Maria Charles arranged for him to receive it at St Joseph’s Provincial House. It was so special with all the sisters making a fuss. It as a clear indication of how special a missionary of God she was.
