Harold Lindland Obituary

Obituary for Harold Lindland

5-20-32 to 1-8-26

Yngvar Harold Lindland was born on May 20, 1932, in Brooklyn, NY, during the Great Depression. He lived most of his life in New City, NY. The son of immigrants from Norway and the youngest of five children, he outlived all his siblings and two wonderful wives, Evelyn (Larsen) Lindland and then Elisabeth Gessler. He is survived by his daughter Cynthia Taber and son-in-law Thomas Taber, his son, Peter Lindland, grandson Mark Billie and great granddaughter Rosie, and grandson Matthew Billie, his wife Sara Billie, and great granddaughter Anya.

Harold overcame many obstacles as he became a respected husband, father, grandfather, singer, youth-group leader, carpenter, salesman, businessman ,and purveyor of God’s word. He was a high school drop-out who spent his time and energy starring on the basketball team instead of studying. He also was an unrepentant juvenile delinquent, who engaged in a variety of daring exploits led by his genius friend, Eddie, which often involved non-lethal, but noisy explosive devices. Even as a 93-year-old man he would laugh uproariously when reminded of his juvenile adventures with Eddie.

He married Evelyn Larsen in 1951, and using his carpentry skills, built his own house in which he lived for 71 years. He was a teenager as he began his working life as a carpenter for his father but left the carpentry trade after he fell off a roof. His knowledge of carpentry allowed him to become a news reporter for Dodge Reports, a small construction information company. In time, he was promoted to salesman, and he realized that he needed a college education to be successful in the business world. So, as a working man, husband, and father of two children, he enrolled at Farleigh Dickson University as a part-time student. After 81/2 years of night school, he graduated with a BS degree in Business and Psychology.

Eventually, Dodge Reports was acquired by McGraw Hill, and Harold kept moving up in the company. His honesty, hard work, and competitive nature made him the regional sales manager for NY. His superpower as a manager was his ability to see the potential in other people, particularly those who were talented but underappreciated. He treated them with respect, gave them opportunities, and rejoiced in their successes.

Throughout his adult life, Harold was an active member of the Clarkstown Reformed Church. Harold loved music and was gifted with a wonderful singing voice. He had a strong Christian faith, and among his many roles, he sang in the choir and worked with the youth group for 12 years. He also worked with the Historical Society and served on a hospital board in the community.

For the past two years, Harold has lived at Peregrine Senior Living in Clifton Park and attended church with us at Jonesville United Methodist church.  He has been lovingly embraced by our church family and the folks at Peregrine.  A big thank you to all who have loved Harold and our family so well.

Harold was a loving husband and father, possessed a great sense of humor, and loved sports, singing and the great outdoors. After 93 years of a well-lived life, he has gone to his heavenly reward (although the youthful pranks may need explanation). We will miss him but are grateful for his life and love.
