Obituary of Douglas Peter Williams
Douglas Peter Williams, 78, passed away on December 29, 2023 at home surrounded by his loving family after a prolonged illness. Son of the late Harry and Helena Williams, Doug was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Doug grew up in the close-knit community of Lansingburgh. He graduated with the class of 1963 from Lansingburgh High School and always looked forward to reconnecting with his classmates at reunions held every five years. Doug continued his education at Hudson Valley Community College. There he met the love of his life, Linda (Light) Williams, whom he married in 1965.
Doug pursued several vocational paths. He worked tirelessly to support his family through his entrepreneurial endeavors while serving many roles within various community organizations. He was one of the first certified paramedics for North Colonie Volunteer Ambulance and a volunteer for the Verdoy Fire Department. He was also a Life Member and past Exalted Ruler of the Colonie Lodge of Elks #2192. Doug had a true devotion and respect for all those that served our country and organized an annual Stand Down for veterans in need. This event became a Colonie Elks tradition for years to follow. For his commitment to this cause, Doug was the recipient of the Jefferson Award for outstanding public service in 2010. Doug retired from North Colonie Central Schools where he was able to use his love of tools and knowledge of mechanics on a daily basis.
Doug’s most cherished legacy is the family he created with his beloved wife of 58 years. Doug was an active participant in his children’s extracurricular activities, coaching many sports teams over the years. He continued his participation when his grandchildren took up sports and could always be found in the bleachers wearing team colors and cheering them on. He traveled frequently with Linda, never missing an opportunity to visit roadside antique shops along the way. While he enjoyed his travels and spending time with friends, he was happiest when his family was together and looked forward to trips to Disney with his young family. He passed on this tradition to his children and grandchildren with a Millennium New Years and 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration at Disney. In more recent years, his family gathered regularly at the Great Sacandaga Lake where they enjoyed boating, yard games and time by the campfire.
Douglas is survived by his wife, Linda; his children Shawn (Betty), Christopher (Carol), Patrick (Darcy), Eric (Jo Lynn) and Lisa; his adored grandchildren Savanna (Zach), Michael, Joshua, Ryan, Brooke, Paige, Tanner, Brody, Beau, Ashley (Ben), Jackie (Steven), Justin and several great grandchildren.
He is also survived by his sister, Diane Williams (Terry), brother-in-law, Mike Light (Loraine), sisters-in-law Pat Lucia, Mel Light (Mary), Patricia Light and nieces and nephews that share fond memories of their time together. In addition to his loving parents, Doug is predeceased by Linda’s parents, Walter and Shirley Light; nephew, Kyle Relyea; brothers-in-law Rick Lucia, Peter Light and sister-in-law, Michelle.
Douglas’ personality was larger than life. His outgoing manner endeared him to all those around him. A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor at a later date. In the spirit of Doug’s helpful nature that knew no bounds, the family encourages all to do a good deed in his memory.
