This is obviously a little late, but I happened to come across this news recently through a google search of my old math professors from my days in undergrad at Albany in the early 2000's. I vividly remember being in Dr. Steinberger's linear algebra class, and I can still visualize him in front of the class teaching when I review similar material now on my own in preparation for teaching my classes. I am a professor of Biostatistics, and linear algebra is fundamental background material for my field. I was very saddened to see this, and I wish condolences to his friends and family.

I was one of his graduate students. Very sad heard this news. Prof. Steinberger taught me a lot especially on his mathematical thinking. These ways to think will benefit me in my future career. Appreciate your teaching. It's been two years since last talking with you. Miss you greatly! May peace with you and your families.

My Condolences to Dr. Steinberger's friends and family.
I was one of his students at both the undergraduate and gradate level. Mark was by far my favorite professor across my 5 years at UAlbany. So much so that I took 3 courses with him. I will always remember his clear glass mug stained from years of use and seemingly endless supply of tea. I took skills and methods that he used in the classroom and deployed them in my own classroom. These were added to my mathematical toolbox of skills which are only improved with practice as he would always say.

I am saddened by this news. I was quite fond of Mark, from the time I met him as a PhD student at U Albany. Fortunately for me he sought me out a few years ago when he was living in Saratoga Springs and we rekindled our friendship. He was a unique individual with an infectious passion for the things he cared about. I will miss him.

I just heard the news - I am so very sorry to hear. I had hoped that he would win this battle. My thoughts and prayers are with his family - especially his children, David, Adam, Sarah and Hanah and his brothers John and Arthur, as well as with Patti. It is so sad when we lose our loved ones early.

Dr. Steinberger had such a burnjng passion for geometry. He was so brilliant and always had a smile in his face when he taught class. I thank him for making my days in matha little brighter even when I felt like a failure. May he be in a better place now. My condolences to his family and friends.

I knew him slightly in HS. class of 1968. Sad to hear about his passing as I was hoping to catch up with him on this our HS's 50th anniversary, I looked up some of his mathmattical papers online from 80's pub date, I understood nothing, as math is not my subject at all, but I was impressed, and happy to see that Mark found something he really enjoyed exploring and teaching.

Dr Steinberger was an amazing professor. I had him for a geometry course during my undergrad years at SUNY Albany. He always tried his best to make sure his students understood the material. I always admired him for that. My Heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to Dr Steinberger’s family and I hope his soul is resting peace!
